Inspected by CVBS
A 144 room InterContinental inside the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, the former city hospital on the Rhône in central Lyon. Twelve meeting rooms across about 1,500 square metres, and one plenary room, Soufflot, seating 400 theatre. Soufflot divides into three, and the rest of the rooms sit between 20 and 100.
It reaches shortlists for the building rather than the numbers. Delegates meet, eat and drink under an eighteenth century dome, and the honest limit is the room count: 144 rooms will not hold the delegate block for a full 400 seat conference.
What it suits
Good for
- A plenary to 400 theatre, or a gala dinner to 320, in one room
- A plenary for 120 with two concurrent streams, since Soufflot divides into three
- Board meetings and leadership offsites of 20 to 90
- Incentive programs that want a heritage building and Lyon’s food on the doorstep
- Syndicate work, with three rooms of 20 on the third floor
Look elsewhere for
- Anything above 400 theatre in one room
- A residential conference of 400 that needs every delegate under one roof, with 144 rooms
- Exhibitions or trade floors, since there is no exhibition hall
The event floor
L’Académie is the hotel’s meeting floor, twelve rooms over four levels. Soufflot is the only room that takes a plenary above 100, and it divides into three for breakouts. The heritage rooms are narrower and better suited to boards, dinners and workshops.
Accommodation
144 rooms and suites, 34 of them suites, inside the listed hospital building. Rooms come as classic and premium, and the suites run from a 46 square metre junior suite to a 74 square metre prestige suite and the presidential suite.
If you need the beds without the ballroom, that is a normal brief and we run it on its own. See group accommodation for how a room block is held, and corporate accommodation for an ongoing rate program.
The rest of the building
Restaurants, bars and public areas.

Where these figures come from, and why a dash is not a zero
A dash means the hotel publishes no figure for that setup. It does not mean the room cannot be set that way, only that we will not print a number the venue has not published.
Every figure is read from The hotel’s own L’Académie capacity chart, checked 22 September 2026. Never estimated, never taken from a directory.
Where the hotel’s published figures differ between pages, we use its L’Académie capacity chart.
The building
Bigger rooms in Lyon
Soufflot tops out at 400 theatre, so a plenary above that moves to the Lyon Convention Centre, whose largest auditorium seats 3,000. Each figure below is read from that venue’s own published material. This is not a survey of the whole Lyon market, only the rooms we checked to make sure nothing on this page overstates the building.
| InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu, Soufflot | 400 theatre, 320 banquet |
|---|---|
| Lyon Convention Centre, Amphithéâtre 3000 | 3,000 seats |
| Lyon Convention Centre, second auditorium | 900 seats |
Questions organisers ask
What size conference can it hold?
Soufflot, on the ground floor, is 433 square metres with a five metre ceiling. It seats 400 theatre, 320 for a banquet, 230 cabaret, 230 classroom and 90 boardroom, and divides into three rooms of about 145 square metres that each seat 120 theatre.
How many meeting rooms are there?
Twelve, across about 1,500 square metres on four levels, under the name L’Académie. Below Soufflot the useful sizes are Salle du Conseil at 100 theatre, Salon du Cloître at 90 and Espace du Petit Dôme at 80. Three rooms on the third floor take 20 each, which covers syndicate groups.
Do the meeting rooms have daylight?
The hotel says all twelve rooms have natural daylight. For a two day workshop programme that matters more than most figures on a chart.
How many guest rooms does it have?
144 rooms and suites, including 34 suites. That is small against a 400 seat plenary, so a full residential conference here usually needs a second hotel for part of the delegate block.

Sources, photography and how we work
Capacities read from the venue’s own published material on 22 September 2026. Comparison figures read from each named venue’s own published material on the same date.
We do not see every room on every visit. Where we were not in a room, its figures come from the venue's own chart rather than from us. We do not rate or score venues and we do not publish rates.
Our service is free to you. We are independent of every venue we put forward, no venue is favoured, and your interests come first.
